I thought these would be cool things to have, but as nobody else out
there
seems to have written them yet here are my DIY versions:
1. MeteosatD2 infrared images

Essential if you live in Scotland and want to catch that brief burst of
clear sky after the latest front passes. Displays a small image of the
Meteosat D2 region, covering most of Europe and the North Atlantic
so you can see what's headed this way. Click on the image to fire
up your default browser and display a bigger version. The feed is from
wetterzentrale.de, and there's a text link to their site. Download
2. Auroral activity monitor

For the space-weather enthusiasts and aurora watchers out there, this
one displays the Northern-hemisphere auroral oval. If the orangey-red
bit
comes anywhere near where you live, and it's dark outside, go outside
and look up. For the biorhythm-challenged among you, the handy red arrow
tells you where the Sun is. Again, click on the image for a larger
version.
The images come courtesy of the NOAA Space Environment Centre, and
there is a text link to their front page which gives a nice X-ray image
of the
Sun, satellite environment plots and solar X-ray fluxes covering the
last 3 days.
